Core 2 (Robin): Illustrating in the style of Sonia Lynn Sadler This week students worked out their concepts and began the 1st out of 3 panel illustrations. Hats off to all the students for reflecting, re-working and simplifying their concepts to make it work! Students at this age have a lot of wonderful ideas so it's super challenging to be asked to omit and simplify. This sparked the conversion how sometimes, less-is-more, in the art world. Core 2 (Patrick): Painting vegetables underground This week students collaborated on defining what made a vegetable a root. I enjoyed the lush color combinations students used and attention to detail. Core 3: Students continued to illustrate their 1st and second chapter of, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Whether it is pen, watercolor & oil pastels, collage or color pencil, I am enjoying the details that I see in each of the student’s illustration. This week we discussed how to add depth to our illustrations, by making sure there is a foreground, middle and background within the composition. Below is a link to a fun practice lesson for your child to work on at home, (totally optional). This is a challenging project and I am happy to see students persevere through it. I will post pic next week. |

Picture Book Illustration Project: Core 3
This morning core 2 students started illustrating their first concepts for chapter 1, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students are coming up with some fantastic creative ways to illustrate their book, and the best part is that they came up with the ideas on their own. Some are illustrating through collage, and others are using Popsicle sticks and creating pop-up page art to communicate thoughts and ideas. Please talk to your students about what is happing in art, this will help them reflect on their work, and be prepared for class next week. Human Rights Advocacy Poster Project: 6th grade Today students watched a short video on, what it means to be an Illustrator. You can find the link under my resource tab. We discussed the history of photo montage and how we could utilize this technique in the classroom. Using the video as inspiration, students translated their thumbnail sketches onto their final poster paper. Please talk to your students about this project here are some questions I have been asking the students to think about Questions to consider: • What is your personal experience with human rights? • What imagery comes to mind when you think of this issue? • What words or phrases do you think of? • Can you connect a song, poem, person, celebrity, symbol to the issue? • What colors/lines/shape might be connected to the issue? |
